Comeau Family History
The first record of a Comeau is on a tomb in
Pouilly-en-Auxois, Burgundy. The inscription reads "Here lies Herbert
Comeau who died in the year 1348." He was the first castle keeper of
Poiully-en-Auxois for the Duke of Burgundy.
Guy deComeau (1450) is
the next documented Comeau. He leaves a long line of descendants that
is easy to follow. From fathers to sons, all seigneurs, officers,
councilors at the Dijon Parliament, abbot and priest, holders of many
government posts. He appears as a ecuyer (riding master, squire.) He
founded a chapel in the parish church of Pouilly, in Auxois, in 1495,
as appears from the title of foundation and from the "lettres patents"
of King Charles VIII in which he is called "the nobleman, Guy De
Comeau." This noble family bears the surname of Creancey from a
Seigniory it possesses. De Comeau, originally from Pouilly en Auxois,
Cote D'or established in Nivernais, in Bourbonnais and a branch
established in America.
Jean deComeau IV
was an advisor to the parliament at Dijon. He was the Lord of either
Choselle or Creancey (Information is difficult to interpret). He was a
"Member de la Chambre" (probably Parliament Chamber) of the Prince
of__?___ Commandant of the Chateau of Dijon
Pierre Comeau II
is the founder of the American branch of the Comeaus. He came
to Acadia in 1632 with the expedition of De Razilly. He helped to
found the fort at La Have River; and upon De Razilly's death in 1635,
went with the new Governor D'aulnay De Charnisey to rebuild the fort
at Port Royal. He was a "tonnelier" by trade, an important occupation
in those times when the conservation of meat and fish was done by
packing them in barrels of salt. Seafood was exported to France in
this manner. Pierre is mentioned for the last time in the
1686 census.
Francois Maza Comeau
was one of the first settlers of the Baie of St Marie. At first he was
at Petit Coudige, NS where he was deported in 1755 to Cocagne, NB and
then to Miramichi and then to Restigouche, PQ. In 1763, he returned to
Port Royal, NS with his family. In 1770 he and his sons were among the
first to receive a land grant at the Bay (Baie Ste Marie.) In July
